today -- old bill

Chinaman shoots Dog

Saturday Sept 19

Same - Got ahead with my work, so as to go to Reno in the morning -- Through in office at 1, & started for home -- Heard pistol shot, down by International -- Ran down there -- Sam, a china washman on B st had shot at a dog belonging to George Roth, a shoemaker on B st -- Dog was muzzled, but made a rush at Chinaman & he had a big navy revolver on and shot at dog but missed -- nearly hit owner of dog, who told him there was no danger, & was trying to catch the dog -- officers took Chinaman to jail -- Went to office & wrote up the item -- Home -- Bed at 3:30

Catarrh Children got Scarlet Fever At Reno

Sunday Sept 20

Clear & hot -- Morning train to Reno -- Gov Adams on board -- I sat and chatted with him all way to Carson -- Found Sam, Alfie and Goodie down with scarlet fever or something like it -- rash broken out all over them -- Sam the worst -- He has been in bed 2 or 3 days -- The otheres are up but not well at all -- Very hot -- over 90 deg -- I sat around & sweated - Bed at 10 -- Eyes very sore and my nose considerably plugged from catarrh --

Monday Sept 21

Clear & warm -- Morning, all children a little better -- Left on morning train -- Home at 10 -- Had to get off cars at old Va depot, as a cave at north end of E st

E st tunnel caved Fire Centennial Assessment Paid Bancroft Draft

tunnel prevented our going through as not quite repaired -- It took place at 5 PM yesterday -- Stopping the evening train till 9:30 -- Cave caused by some sewers rotting the timbers -- Work as usual -- Bed 2:30 -- Nose and eyes better -- Paid Centennial assessment today $27.63 -- 3 cts per share --

Tuesday Sept 22

The same -- Wrote letters to wife, and A L Bancroft -- Got draft from A L B this morning for $25.70 old Gold Hill News account balance -- I sent it back protested -- & sent letter to them tnight -- About 11, fire at American bakery -- Burst off roof & 1 adjoining -- Bed at 3 --

Letters badly Mixed Catarrh Bad Eclipse of Moon

Same -- Letter from wife read, enclosing letter that should have been sent to Bancroft & Co, San F -- So I have made a bad blunder & sent the wrong letters in respective envelopes -- to A L B & co & my wife -- Bed at 2 -- Grand eclipse of the moon this evening, from about 9 till about 1 -- About 3 quarters obscured -- Came on left side & passed around the top & passed off lower right hand side -- Unheralded & unexpected to most people -- Catarrh pretty bad -- Nose plugged and eyes very sore --

Cloudy -- cold -- Very sudden change -- 1st rain of Fall season about noon today in light showers, with light dash of snow -- I went back to room 7 put on thicker

undershirts & stockings & coat -- At Fredrick's auction store today I bought at private sale a nice little coal oil hand stove for $2.50 -- also gave me a lot of books, & an oil can -- I get in telegrams to the San Francisco papers on my engagement now almost daily, and more so the last day or two -- Worked late in office tonight -- fixing up for tomorrow -- Fixed up concluding portion of Cousin Annie's account of her & Bob, et al, camping trip out in the mountains over in Plumas & Sierra Counties a few days ago -- Through at 3 -- Soon as I struck the street I caught suicide of James Brook, a Mason Valley man, 40 years old, out

cold A L Bancroft & co wife & Alfie in Va

on South C street -- overdose of morphine -- cause family troubles and gambling -- Went to International saloon & got full item from Dr. Webber -- Went to telegraph office & telegraphed it to SF Chronicle -- Bed at 4:30 -- Cloudy & cold -- Thermometer at Gillig's front went down to 45 this PM -- Wrote short note to Bancroft & co enclosing their letter from me which I sent by mistake to my wife --

Same -- Wife & Alfie came on evening train -- I in office tillmost 2 -- Home -- Bed at 2:30 --

Bob Lowery Catarrh better

Sunday Sept 27

The same -- Breakfast at Morrills, dinner at Chanmond's & saw them off on 5:25 PM train -- Wrote resolutions on death of Robert E Lowery and went to regular monthly meeting of the Pacific Coast Pioneers at 7:30 PM -- got Dr Delavan & Lee McGown the other members of the Committee to sign resolutions, & reported them, & they were adopted -- Home at 11 -- Wrote up report, & other items for Enterprise -- Bed 3 --

Monday Sept 28

Clear & very pleasant -- As usual -- I think my catarrh is getting better -- Nose nor eyes quite so bad -- I have been putting castor oil up my nostrels with little finger, [fuly?] I think it is the only time racket -- Bed 3 --

Carpentering Coal oil Stove

Tuesday Sept 29

Same -- Indian Summer -- AM, did a job of carpentering [razeed?] the top of big wood box in my room down to a [blank/erased?] so that cover will stand level -- make it handier to set things on -- Also bought big gallon coffee pot from Gillig, for 2 bits, to heat water on my coal oil stove -- Work as usual -- Bed at 3:30

Wednesday Sept 30

Same -- Bed at 3:30 -- Fired up my coal oil stove and heated water in my coffee pot
