this AM when I arose, and got a nice shave -- Took just 1/2 and have to make 2 quarts of water boil in coffee pot --

Thursday Oct 1, 1885

Clear & very pleasant -- Met Johnny McMasters at dinner at Morrill's -- Just over from California -- locomotive engineer on Southern Pacific RR, between San Francisco and Oakland -- Pleasant chat over old times -- Used to be in Gold Hill, but haven't seen him for 5 or 6 yrs or more -- PM, I reported County Commissioners -- regarding monthly meeting -- Evening, Daggett gave free lecture at Opera House on "The Past and Present of the Hawaiian Kingdom" -- Crowded house -- Read his lecture -- took 2 3/4 hours -- rather prosy -- I heard 15 minutes of it -- Wrote it up -- Bed at 3:30 -- Rapid delivery PO system went into effect today in the U.S.

Fire at Montagnes on South C st Catarrh better --

Friday Oct 2

Same -- Lively day -- On my way out to the Chollar and Savage offices, at noon, found a fire ahead, near the junction of B & C sts -- In a Tailor shop -- Friedlander's adjoining Montagne's -- Burned off part of roof -- Damage $150 -- Then went to the Chollar and Savage offices -- then down town -- At 4 PM another fire alarm Stovepipe in cabin back of Gould & Curry works on D st -- No harm done -- but big excitement -- I telegraphed to Bulletin, and also, tonight, to Chronicle --

Through in office at 2- Bed at 3- tired, you bet- I am fast recovering from the catarrh- Had it lighter than ever, so far- Nose little plugged Eyes pretty sore- Used caster oil in nostrile- Its the boss racketDaggett leaves for WashingtonKaneen Farewell TestimonialSaturday Oct. 3 Same- warmer- letter from wife says she will not come up, so endorsed pass for me to come down- Train 2 1/2 hours late owing to slight collision on the C P near the Summit- Evening train book Daggett & wife off for Washington- Will return shortly- J S Kaneen & wife & family leave for Los Angeles tomorrow evening to make future home- He having always been prominent man here, Mayor, County commissioner etc., his friends got him up a nice farewell testimonials in shape of (grand) ball at National Guard Hall- Over 100 couple present- Music, dancing and a parting address by Hon J A Stephens responded to by Kaneen, also by D O Adkinson the Postmaster- Dance kept up till after midnight- $1 admission- for lemonade, cigars for occasion- I was there short time- Bed at 3:30 off the ( ) Sunday Oct. 4 Same- Rose at noon- Was at office short time- At 5:25 PM took train for Reno- At 8 oclock, when 6 miles from Reno, going at 45 miles an hour, we ran into a band of cattle, killed 7 & got ditched, or derailed- Whole train off- Carriage

from Reno brought us in at 10:30 to Lake House- went home- Bed at 12- Kaneen _& family on board the train, but not making connection with west bound CP they had to lay over at Reno till tomorrow evening before they could go on to Los Angeles (Watty) Hall dead Funeral Monday Oct. 5 Clear & warm- Up early to get train if possible- Breakfast- Went to Depot- Traub got on track at 8, ran in to Reno at 8:30, & at 9:30 I took passage on train for Va- Made it at 12:30 - Office late tonight- Through at 2:30- Home- read- Bed at 4- Watty Hall died this morningTuesday Oct. 6 The same- Bed at 3- Attended Watty Hall's funeral this PM- Myself and John Brady marched at head of procession, escorted remains from Exempt Fireman's Hall along C to Taylor, down E & along it to the depot- shipped on evening train for (Leme) Mountaincooler Annie Lindsay "Wages of Sin" Col Shaw Moves to Va with his family Wednesday Oct. 7 Same- As usual- Bed 3Thursday Oct. 8 Cloudy, threatening & cold- PM wrote note to Cousin Annie Lindsay in response to

one she sent me a day or two ago, requesting me to send her a copy of the Enterprise, containing the first instalment of her account of her recent camping trip on the Sierra- Also sent her the paper desired- Also wrote letter to wife enclosing pass- Baldwin Theatre Co. playing at Opera House tonight & 2 nights more- Big house- I was there few minutes- Good- play was "The Wages of Sin"- Col Shaw got his wife up today, from Carson & they have taken house on north C street & make their home there hereafter in this city- Occupy it let time tonight together- Bed at 2James V Paige "Called Back" Wife in Va Friday Oct. 9- 1885 The same till evening, when I cleaned up- Mining report today- I stood in- Bed at 3 oclock- The Baldwin theatre Co played "Called Back" this evening- Got letter from Jas W Paige Hartford, Conn, acknowledging receipt and thanking me for the specimens I sent him on the 17th of September- He is the one Mark Twain wrote me aboutSaturday Oct. 10 Clear- cooler- Wife came up on morning train- ate together at Charmond's and walked with her out to 4th Ward Schoolhouse & she went on to Gold Hill, to see Jane etc.- She returned on bus at 7 PM- Went to room awhile then took her to theater & left her to see play of "The Veteran"- I worked hard in the office"The Veteran" 1st Frost of Season

State Fair "Complimentary"

Through at 1 -- Home -- Bed 1:30 -- First frost of the season last nightm wilted the tomatoe vines, etc at an Flat & elsewhere -- Colder tonight -- Col Shaw was at Carson today attending Bd of Regents of State Univsersity -- Returned on 7PM train & stood in some during evening, with old Jim Townsend to assit him -- Then he went off gamling again -- Received season ticket to State Fair yesterday -- but as it was complimentary only to myself & not family, I sent it back to them this evening, for correction, or retention --

Wife in Va -- Bad Headache "Wages of Sin" Wife off for Reno Trouble from Bancroft

Sunday Oct 11

The same -- Rose at 10:30 -- Ate at Chanmond's -- Home all day -- Wife had headache -- dinner at Chanmonds -- home -- At 9 I went to Theatre -- The Baldwin Theatre Co playing one more night -- Played "Wages" of Sin" -- I saw all but 1st act -- 4 acts -- Very good house & excellent play -- Out at 10:45 -- straight home -- Bed 11:30 -- Very early for me.

Monday Oct 12

Clear, cool & very pleasant -- Up to 6:30 with wife -- She went to breakfast -- I took her satchel to depot & at 8 she left for Reno -- I worked as usual -- PM J W (Whitaker) Atty at law notified that he had read my four notes of 5 yrs ago from Bancroft & Co for collection - Told him I will write Bancroft tomorrow -- They
