Tuesday Nov 3

Cloudy, cold, blustering & threatening -- Rose at 11:30 -- About town as usual -- Evening about 10 slight flurry of snow -- Office till past 2 -- Bed at 4 -- snowing lightly, but blowing like the devil occasionally --

1st Snow of Season Sharon Dying

Wednesday Nov 4

Stormy -- Rose at 1:30 snowing very lively -- Whole country white --melted almost as fast as it fell -- PM changed to rain -- Not much of either snow or rain fell, but enough to make the streets pretty muddy -- Evening cleared off cold & freezing -- Mud froze -- Work as usual -- Through in office at 1:30 -- Bed at 2:30 -- Some cloudy -- freezing -- 1st snow, and 1st freeze of the season -- The latest telegram from San Francisco tonight was to the effect that Sharon, who has been sick from malarial fever the last two or three weeks was lying very ill at the Palace Hotel, tonight, and that his life was dispaired of --

Cloudy, with several light drizzly showers -- Wrote & sent letter to Sam Crescengo, Austin, on stocks -- Evening was at theater short time -- Saw two last acts of "East Lynne," as played by Mrs. Jeffreys Lewis and good dramatic company -- It was

Sunday Nov 8

Clear & pleasant -- Overslept myself this morning & didnt wake till nearly 10, so couldn't go to Reno on morning train -- PM attended meeting of the Exempts -- At 5:25 PM left on train for Reno -- Arrived at 8:10 on time -- All right -- Bed 11

Monday Nov 9

Clear & pleasant -- Left wife [phrase is erased] Va at 10 AM -- work as usual -- Evening at show of "Rag Baby" theatrical company at Opera House -- Very funny -- Bed at 3 --

Cloudy, cold, with some snow squalls in the PM -- cold freezing night -- Wrote letter to G H W Crockett Austin, County treasurer & ex officer Tax Receiver of Lander County, enclosing $1.80 to pay my taxes on my old cabin and lots -- also

sent $1 greenback to take a drink with Bill Gibson, Charley Richards old man Wright and others, at John (Leutgens') saloon -- or where they please -- 6 page letter -- Second & last night of the "Rag Baby" show at Opera House -- Pretty fair house -- Was in office all evening -- Home at 2 -- Bed 3 -- Bitterly cold -- Thermometer in my room down to 45 -- Stole a big dry goods box as I came home to bed & took it along --

Wednesday Nov 11

Clear & cold -- Froze all day in shade -- letter from Sam Crescengo, on stocks -- Office late -- Bed at 4:30 -- The big dry goods box I stole last evening [ ] this morning I chopped up this AM, & have now a pretty good amount of fuel -- Fired up on this when came Home -- room temperature 44 deg, it being a bitter cold night, but soon got it up to 58, with good fire of wood & coal, and went to bed comfortable, with a quart (Seltzer fry? ) of hot water between my feet & legs -- Thats the boss racket of all -- Sharon was still alive at least accounts --

Bitters come in sheets, ready printed, for insertion each day for the year round -- This one, Old Parkinson of the Tribune thought I wrote, same as all the rest and shoots off this in his paper of yesterdays: Col Shaw went to Reno this evening, leaving old Jim Townsend to do the Enterprise for him -- Bed 4:30 -- Freezing cold --

Clear & pleasant -- Mining day -- work as usual -- Bed at 3 -- Sharon died at 3:32 this PM in his Palace Hotel, San Francisco -- Flags at 1/2 mast in Carson and here --

Saturday Nov 14

Same -- PM attended meeting of trustees of Centennial -- Got letter from Sam Crescengo today about stocks -- Evening at 8 I walked out to the Fulton Foundry on the Divide, and saw a model quartz mill made to send to the New Orleans and London Expositions -- It is 1/4 the size of the regular quartz mills connected with Comstock ore reduction -- Made by a Comstock boy, 23 yrs old, named E J Squier -- Was put in practical operation 1st time this PM -- A really wonderful piece of

Cloudy & inclined to be stormy -- A good smart rain in the morning wet the ground three or four inches -- Snowed good in the mountains up the Truckee, and north ward , and south to above Steamboat Springs -- only a few drops fell in Carson -- or Va -- Left on 7:10 AM train for Va -- Reached there at 10 -- Flags 1/2 mast in Carson on the mills along the river, lots of others in Gold Hill & away down the

canyon -- and only a half dozen in Virginia -- All in mourning token of funeral of Sharon this PM, in San Francisco -- Most of the principal stores in Va closed from 1 PM & till funeral was over -- Got my receipt from Crockett County Treasurer of Lander County, at Austin, for my State & county taxes on my old log cabin property in Austin -- $1.80 -- $40 real estate, & $10 improvement = $50 -- Work as usual -- Bed at 4 -- ___________ (This goes back one day)

A little cloudy & cold -- Bounced out of bed at ten minutes to 7 looked at watch & thought it showed 8 -- Jerked on my clothes in just 9 minutes -- rushed for train & was told by officer Ben Higbee that I had plenty of time -- Looked at my watch

At Reno -- 1st Big Snow 9 inches 1st sleighing

and found I was an hour ahead, sure enough -- So I went back to room -- worked &
