COUNCIL AGAINST INTOLERANCE IN AMERICA

LINCOLN BUILDING, NEW YORK CITY TELEPHONE: VANDERBILT 6-5584

May 9, 1939

Miss Marian Anderson
c/o Hurok Musical Bureau
30 Rockerfeller Plaza,
New York City

Dear Miss Anderson:

Reports from all over the United States continue to
bring alarming news of the growth of intolerance.
Forces in this country are inciting racial and
religious biogtry, endeavoring to duplicate here
the shocking persecutions in Europe, which have
horrified civilized men and women everywhere.

Because of this situation we are joining with the
Council Against Intolerance in America, to do an
emergency job to defeat the destructive propaganda
which today assails the American tradition of
religious freedom and human equality.

We ask you to meet us on Tuesday, May 16th, at
4 o'clock at the Hotel Algonquin, to help plan
the work which all of us must do to stamp out
this menace. Will you not phone or write us
at this address that you will be present?

Very sincerely yours,
