[England, 1780-1850] Begins with an 18th-century, undated section of medical recipes, primarily for horses and other animals, but with some remedies for worms in children, ague, heart burn, rheumatism, etc. (p. 1-26), with a listing of the contents of this section on f. i recto. Remainder of the volume comprises culinary recipes for meats, cheeses, puddings, preserves, pickles; mead, wine, shrubs, and other beverages, with a few medical recipes interspersed (p. 40-165). The last section of the volume beginning on p. 107 includes some dates, 1803-1836, and attributions for most of the recipes included; the most frequently occurring names are Mrs. J. Arden Clegg or Isabella Clegg and Miss Barber. One attribution includes a place name, "Mrs. Christopherson, Sutterton, 1803." Other surnames include Barton, Carhill, Carrington, Collin, Forbes, Hamilton, Harrison, Horsley, Howe, Hughes, Parkinson, Urquhart, and Ware; plus the full names Gentle Brown and Charlotte Jones. A few recipes are attributed to "Enquire Within."

For Rheumatism Lumbago. Sprains & Chillblains

One raw egg well beaten, half a pint of vinegar, one ounce of spirits of turpentine, a quarter of an ounce of spirits of [wine?], a quarter of an ounce of camphor - These ingredients to be beaten well together then put in a bottle & shaken well for ten minutes after which to be corked down tightly to exclude the air. In half an hour it is fit for use - Directions - To be well rubbed in two or three or four times a day - For rheumatism in the head to rubbed at the back of the neck & behind the ears From "Enquire Within" -

148 Raspberry Vinegar Put a lb of fine ripe paspberries in a bowl, bruise them well & pour upon them a quart of white wine vinegar, next day strain the liquor on a lb of fresh raspberries bruise them also & the following day do the same but do not squeeze the fruit or it will make it ferment. only drain the liquor as [dry?] as you can pour it. The last time pass it through a canvas bag previously wet with the vinegar to prevent waste. Put the juice into a stone jar with a lb of sugar to every pint of juice. The sugar must be broken into lumps. Stir it & when [bottled?] set the jar into a pan of water, let it simmer & skim it. When cold bottle it. It will be thick like honey "Enquire Within"

149 Lemon Syrup {underscored}

1/4 lb of Citric Acid - 3 lbs of Lump or Coffee Sugar - Rind of a Lemon - 3 pints of hot water - Stand till cold - Bottle. I only make half this quantity at a time C.A. Wray

Lemonade {underscored} To one sliced lemon add 1/2 lb of moist Sugar a dessert spoonful of Tartaric Acid then pour on 7 pints of boiling water Miss Harrison

Ginger Puddings {underscored} Time 3 hours. 1/4 lb of Suet - 1/2 of Flour - 1/4 lb of moist sugar 1 good teaspoonful of ground ginger. Chop a 1/4 lb of Suet/beef/very fine. Mix it with the flour - sugar & ginger. Mix all [dry?]. & put it in a well buttered basin. Boil it three hours - and when done turn it out - and serve with white wine sauce.

Triple Hair Wash

2 drams of [Sal?] Ammonia 1 oz [ounce] Tincture of Cantharides 1 oz [ounce] Eau de Cologne 1 oz [ounce] Spirit of Rosemary 13 oz [ounces] Camphor water Isabella [Clegg?] -----For Heartburn

Squeeze an Orange into a tumbler- add a little cold water and sugar to taste - then put in half a teaspoonful of Bi-carbonate of Soda - and stir. [quote] [Esquire?] Within [end quote] -----For washing [insects?] off Greenhouse Plants ---Take 2 oz [ounces] of Borax - and 1 oz [ounce] of [Sulphur?] - Put in a basin - and pour on boiling water. When difsolved [dissolved] and cold - put into a pail - and fill up with cold water. Use with a syringe. Mifs [Miss] [Ware?]
