UPenn Ms. Codex 1038. Collection of recipes for desserts, meats, preserves, "soops," and condiments, including Indian-influenced dishes such as curry and pickles. Some recipes are attributed, and Paxton, Baker, Ward, Pridham, Simeon, and Sayer are surnames that appear repeatedly. Included among the recipes are a few preparations for household tasks such as marking linen and making a red dye. Beginning upside down from the end is a collection of medical preparations. To Cure any Scorbutick or inveterate humours. Sponge burnt in a Crucible or Fire Shovel to a Powder, take as much as will lie on a Shilling every Morning (or if the case is bad twice a day) -- Drinking half a pint of Milk Whey after it.

To Cure the Scurvy and Purify the Blood. Take a pint of New Milk in the Morning. -- Let it stand uncoverd 'till Night, then take all the Cream clea off, put into the Milk the third part of a pound of Raisons of the Sun minced very small, Let it boil, and as the Curd rises, Squeeze in the Juice of half a Seville Orange or Lemmon, & when the Curd is fully risen, strain it thro' a Sieve, and keep it 'till next Morning. Drink all the Whey for Breakfast -- You may Drink it a little warm. Note. This cured a Strong Scorbutick Humour of 4 Years standing.

An excellent Receipt for a Cough. An handfull of ground Ivy, D: of Cup Moss, D: of Maidenhair, a Quarter of a pound of Stick Liquorish sliced, D: of Figgs, D: of Raisons stoned -- Boil these together in 5 pints of river Water, 'till half is consumed, and Sweeten it to the Palate with Candy'd Eringo Root. Take half a pint, Add to it a Quarter of a pint of Milk, & Drink it in the Morning & at Night going to Bed, and as much [oftener?] as you can. Take two Ounces of Conserve of Roses, an Ounce of Sperma-Ceti, a Spoonfull of Sallad Oyl, a Spoonfull of Clarifyed Honey, Mix these together, and Add 50 or 60 Drops of Elixir of Vitrol, & take the Quantity of an Hazel nut Nut and Morning, Drinking the above Liquor after it.

Tincture of Rhubarb. Half an Ounce of the best Rhubarb cut in thin Slices, Infuse it in a pint of double distill'd Anniseed water, put to it a Quarter of an Ounce of Cardamums shell'd & a little bruised, Let it stand a Fort'night at least, shaking the Bottle every day -- Then let it settle 3 or 4 days and pour it off into another Bottle and it will be very fine. You may Add a little Saffron to these Ingredients if you please.

For an Ague. Thirty drops of Balsam of Peru an hour before the Fit in a Glass of White Wine -- a Vomit before you take the Balsam is better

For the Piles and great relief for the Worms. Tale a new Velvet Cork that would fit a Quart bottle, and burn it to a Coal, then rub it very fine, and put it into half an Ounce of White Elder Ointment and a Quarter of an Ounce of flower of Brimstone, MIx them well together and Anoint the part Afflicted going to Bed.

For a Sore Mouth. One large Spoonfull of honey, two Tea Spoonfulls of Bole Ammoniae, and as much burnt Allum as will lie on a Sixpence -- Mix these well together and apply it to the part several times in a day.

An Excellent Receipt for a Sore Throat. A small Quantity of honey, as much burnt Allum as will give it a quick Taste, and Syrrup of Mulberries enough to colour it.

these 10 days in a pint of Brandy, keep the bottle well stop'd & shake it once or twice a day -- Let it stand in the Sun or Chimney borner -- Strain it into another Bottle, and keep it for use -- The dose to a man is 2 Spoonfulls to a Woman One, To a young person half a Spoonfull, To a new born Child 8 or 10 Drops -- to be taken in Water, or Wine and Water. In Periodical or inveterate Cases, it must be taken in a Morning fasting, in other Cases at any time during the fit, or when a fit is approaching.

Cure for an Ague. Take common Allum and Nutmeg, double the Weight of Allum -- to that of Nutmeg, powder the Allum and Grate the Nutmeg very fine, and Mix them all together -- A Dose for an Adult as much as can be heap'd on half a Crown, for a Child on a Shilling or Sixpence, to be taken at the intermission of the disorder mix'd with White wine Whey or warm Ale and to be continued at every intermission for 3 or 4 times, if the preceding Dose is not Efficatious -- The Patient must drink White wine Whey or Warm Ale if Thirsty, and keep himself warm for Sometime after taking the Medicine -- 2 or 3 Doses generally make a Cure.

A Wash to take of Tan and Yellow Spots. An handfull of Fematary Tops, D: of Bean blossoms, & two handfulls of Elder flower -- Distill these Slowly with a Gallon of Butter Milk -- put a Cup with three pennyworth of Camphire upon the Greens, but not to mix with them.

To make Imperiale -- To be used as the constant Liquor for the Scurvy. One Ounce of powder of Cream of Tartar, Two Ounces of fine Sugar, and half a Lemmon Peel -- put them in a Stone Jugg and pour two Quarts of boiling Water upon them, Stir it about, & let it stand 'till next day, and the pour it off into Bottles for use.

For a Cold, Fever, Soreness of bones, Rhumatism &. Let One Ounce of well prepared Glass of Antimony powder'd be infused cold in 24 Ounces of Strong Maderia or Mountain Wine for 10 or 12 days -- shaking it sometimes -- Let it settle for a day or two, then Decant the Wine and strain it through Whited brown paper and keep it in a Glass bottle well stop'd. NB. The Antimonial Glass should not be powder'd in a Brass or Bell Mettal Mortar. This Infusion may be given in Whey, Tea, Wine & from 30 or 40, to 60, or 80 drops to Adults -- from 10, to 20, or 30 to Children, as an Alternative, Attonnant or Diaphoretic -- Much larger Doses will Purge and Vomit briskly.

Soot Drops. -- A Remedy against Fits, Cramps, Asthma's, Hysterical complaints & [?] Half an Ounce of pure Woot Soot, the Shells of 12 Hen Eggs dry'd and finely powder'd -- half an Ounce of Assafetide cut small, Infuse

Elixir Proprietatis. Myrrh, Alloes & Saffron, of each half an Ounce finely Powder'd -- Rectified Spirits of Wine half a pint, put them together in a Glass well stop'd, and let it stand four or five days shaking it often.

To mark Linnen. Vermilio mix'd with an Equal Quantity of boiled Oil & Spirits to the consistence of Paint. You must mark with a very very small pointed Pen or Bodkin, & let your Linnen lay a Fortnight after, before it is Wash'd.

For a bad Cough or Consumptive Case. Take 40 Garden Snails, bruise the Shells, but not clean them, Boil them in two Quarts of Water 'till it comes to a Quart, then strain it thro' a Jelly bag with a piece of Mint at the Bottom of it, -- Let a Grown Person take a Quarter of a Pint of this every Morning Warm, with 3 or 4 Spoonfulls of Milk and a Lump of Sugar in it -- If a Child, a Coffee Cup full.

Dr. James's Artificial Asses Milk. A Quarter of a Pint of Spring Water, the same Quantity of Milk, made just warm, beat up the white of an Egg in it, and Sweeten it to your taste, with Eringo Root or Lump Sugar -- Take it once or twice a day.
