-picted was found to be insuf-
-ficient in sand excavation
where the action of the spring
water had to be contended against,
and latterly it was extended to
20 feet, and even to 23 feet at points
where the action of ^the spring [water, struck through]
was most energetic . From the
nature of the soil through
which the channel had to be
maintained, which may be
described as sand [impregnated, struck through] saturated by
[with, struck through] springs, it will be under-
-stood that this trench was only
maintained in an efficient
state by constant clearance, and
by every attention being [directed, struck through] given
to the regular flow of the water
from the foundations, the small-
-est [remissness?] on the part of the
clearing parties, had, in fact, a
ready indication in the state
of the high water mark upon
the foundations in progress, and
it was quite impracticable to
be indifferent to the maintenance
of a work on which all progress
depended. During flood seasons
the protective embankments were
necessarily injured, and portions
of the cut itself filled up; such
events were inevitable from the
very position of the works
situated as they were in the
course of the torrent itself,
whatever the difficulties might
have been, and however vexa-
tious in the detail of progress,
the ultimate success has been
most remarkable.

One very great point was
gained
