Dear Governor Janklow:

Enclosed for your information is a copy of the latest railroad plan for the State of South Dakota titled "RAILPLAN SOUTH DAKOTA 1983". This document contains a description of the State's rail planning process including policies, goals and objectives used to guide rail planning and project implementation; the rail system in the State, including miles operated, carriers providing service and traffic characteristics; past planning efforts; current rail improvement activities; and future rail planning direction and issues. The State rail map is located in the Appendix as is a documentation of past State activities specifically relating to rail line purchases and service restoration.
