With a recently made acquaintance I heard "hearings" pro & con for suffrage and anti suffrage. There seemed to me no comparison between the realtive ability, force, and importance manifested respectively by the two sides, and one felt that for the majority of those present at the hearing suffrage had won. That may be, of course, that a majority of

BLACK HILLS CHAPTER

DEADWOOD, S. D., Jan. 9th, 18 191

My Dear Mrs.Pyle:

Wonder how you arrived home, and when? I thought I would tell you that owing to the Xmas drive of the Red Cross and the holidays, that I thought it best to wait a little bit before commencing to gather in the shekels. I hope to start in a few weeks, and will let you know what success I have. Will always be glad to hear your plans for the campaign. I had a right good meeting the other night, and had a chance to put suffrage over on some uunsuspecting ones, I enclose you clipping. Haven't heard from Mrs.Boyce , and wonder if she is in the fight there, and whether or not she won't stay over until after tomorrow. Would surely love to have staid myself, and won't we be anxious to hear how the matter comes out? Did you meet your son the night I left Chicago?

Much love, and good wishes. When 'Imgot home was sick for about ten days, but now feel like my old self, and ready to go to work in earnest.

Putting in some licks at the Red Cross in order to get business in shape so any one can do it.

Lovingly, Mabel Rewman

Mrs. John L. Pyle, Huron, S. Dak.

My Dear Mrs. Pyle:-

Your letter of January 7th confirming my appointment as State Secretary of the Woman's Committee of Council of National Defense has been received, and I thank you very much for your gracious affirmation. You may be assured that I shall be a faithful worker on the committee and remain in harmony with the members of the committee.

My task has been a somewhat heavy one within the few weeks that I have been acting as secretary because of the necessity of becoming thoroughly acquainted with the work that had been done previously. Dr. Peabody directed her correspondence concerning the committee to come to me, and also gave me the previous correspondence to file. As you readily see, that meant that I had to read practically all of it in order to properly classify the material. The Woman's Committee surely takes in a lot of territory and forcasts an immense amount of work for the Executive Board. Your suggestion of a meeting in the near future is a timely one, and I hope that it can be brought about.

Mrs. Campbell has made no report on finances, but she

tells me over the telephone that she has collected $150.00. Very good work for a start, I am sure. Will you tell me what the legal procedure of the Executive Board is in regard to handling of funds? I find no By Laws in the material given me by Dr. Peabody. Could you mail me a copy or tell me the correct procedure?

Mrs. Campbell also tells me that you gave her over the telephone confirmation of Dr. Peabody's appointment of Mrs. K. Zetlitz of Sioux Falls as chairman of Registration. Would it be asking too much of you to send that confirmation in writing so that it may be filed in the office? You are acquainted with Mrs, Zetlitz so she needs no introduction from me. She is a splendid woman, and I know will work harmoniously with us.

The Publicity work for the Registration of Women is a very Important one, and will you not offer some plans and suggestions? You are so closely in touch with the results of the campaigns in other states that you will have so much to tell that is of vital interest.

Sincerely, (Mrs. S. A) Mabel D Christenson State Secretary
