Mrs. John Pyle, Huron, South Dakota.
My dear Mrs. Pyle:
I brought the buttons back to New York and handed them over to Miss Ogden. Of course that is her job as President of the Publishing Company. I am free to say that it was the most awful thing that has ever happened to us in all our history, and I am myself convinced that it was some contemptible employee in the button company who did the thing. Miss Ogden has gone up to Rochester for an interview with the President of the Company today, and she will take up the matter with you.
It is my understanding that I shall meet you in Sioux Falls. I will arrive D. V. on the 10th and will go direct to the hotel where I have been before. I have forgotten its name. I shall expect a place reserved for me, and that you will there give me the names of the women who are to take charge of me in the various places where I shall go.
It is my understanding from your last telegram that the last appointment will be Vermillion, and that you do not care to place the 15th at Canton; that is satisfactory to me, and I will arrange accordingly.
Anticipating the pleasure of seeing you soon -
I am, most cordially yours, Carrie Chapman Catt President

COUNCIL OF NATIONAL DEFENSE WOMAN'S COMMITTEE SOUTH DAKOTA DIVISION
123 SOUTH MAIN AVE. SIOUX FALLS, S. D.
(COPY) October 5th, 1918.
Mr. Kenneth Sellers, Secretary to the Governor, Pierre, South Dakota.
My dear Mr. Sellers:-
Thank you for your letter of Sept. 24th.
It was a delicate matter for me to take the intiative and my various attempts to formulate a constructive reply to your letter have hitherto failed. One must not give up because there are difficulties in the way.
You say: "The Governor would be glad to have your further elucidations." I should be very happy could I throw even a little light, and am glad to try.
It only confuses the issue to suppose that the present situation developed because a particular person (who happens to be known as Helen S. Peabody) was not appointed on the reorganized State council. Not only did she not seek election to the Woman's Committee and appointment on the original State Council, but she knew nothing of such election and appointment until they were officially announced to her.
Last week I had a long talk with Mr. George Wright, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the State Council. It has seemed to me that possibly Mr. Wright and I might try together to formulate a plan for cooperation between the State Council and the Woman's Committee, which plan, when formulated, should be presented for approval or disapproval to the State Council and the Woman's Committee. Should both these bodies approve, the plan would then be submitted to the Governor for final action.
Does the Governor approve such attempt on the part of the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the State Council and the Chairman of the Woman's Committee?
Very truly yours, (signed) Helen S. Peabody

Oct. 5, 1918 My dear Mrs. Pyle:- I have succeeded in making good arrangements for hanging the banner this morning, all that is needed being now the mayor's sanction. He is away today, but I do not think it will be any trouble to get his sanction shortly.
If the banner has not been sent, please send it as soon as possible so that we will have plenty of time to get it up before the festival, as all labor will be busy getting ready for the festival. The electric light people gave permission to use their poles on Broadway in the busiest part of town, And I hope the banner is going to be large enough to show up well. One of the
