Jan.[January] 14, [1]943, Thursday Something springlike is in the air today, though gray, cloudy and cold, but not so cold as it was the days before. I had an active day, preparing for my guests who are coming for tea this afternoon. Now everything is neat and clean, well aired and well heated. Having finished Saratoga Trunk, I am reading some short stories by Hemingway. Columbia is on the air, often fading entirely.
The situation in Italy – in consequence of the air raids – must be serious. Their radio stations close at 10 pm. Summer time! from Milan I hear that about compulsory evacuation of the flats, not only people but furniture too. Furniture is sent to some state-ware houses.
