Still Sept 13, Wed.

10 15 p.m. The raid was prolongued and came in several waves (after the fifth wave I gave up counting) so, against my best judgment I went down the shelter’s foreground and am up just now, stealing up quietly in the dark as poor Maria Pató orders people furiously around. As we had recently almost but daytime raids, when she is out, she missed this pleasure for a long time and has to enjoy herself tonight.

11 10 p.m. I have been out on the hillside to see the fires burning. Oil this time, [strikethrough] smell, [/strikethrough] the acrid [strikethrough] stink [/strikethrough] smell of burning oil is [strikethrough] on the streets [/strikethrough] all over, the starlit sky is striped with heavy smoke—clouds and at the East and Southeast big fires on several places. Many people in twos and threes are to out to see. The raid sounded if it would be all over the town, may be, some bits were not even so near but very heavy ones. The floor was shaking. [strikethrough] and trembling in my flat and downstairs too. [/strikethrough]* 11 28 p.m. Bpest sirens sounded, the fifth time today. I would not be surprised, if tomorrow we would step out of the whole affair.

*They were light bombs but near us.
