Governor Wm. Spry, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear sir:-

It appears that one Joe Hill, member of the Industrial Workers of the World, has been convicted of murder and sentenced to death, in your state, only upon very uncertain evidence.

Kindly use your influence in having full justice done to Hill, by securing him a new trial.

Respectfully, S. Philip Blechman

ERNEST JAMES BEUTELL RAMWAY, NEW JERSEY

July, 31, '14.

Governor Spry, Utah

Honorable Sir:-

I herewith most earnestly appeal to your sense of common justice to request you to extend clemency to a fellow worker and brother, Joe Hill, who has been unfortunately adjudged guilty of crime, but there appears to be a strong element of doubt existing in his case.

The prosecution failed to show a motive for the crime; the defendant was not identified by any of the witnesses, and his conviction rested on the flimsiest kind of circumstanial evidence.

You know that the ethics of Christ's gospel inspire men to devine action of forgiveness, it is with this trust in your faith of true justice that I appeal to you to save a human life, for it is not true justice to take that which cannot give.

Trusting that this short appeal will be of some service in bringing us nearer to that glad day when universal brotherhood will prevail, and capital punishment will be no more.

With most humble thanks for any favor conferred to Joe Hill, I remain,

Devoted to the betterment of humanity,

Ernest James Bentell

Dear Sir:

Your communication, written on behalf of Joseph Hillstrom, has been by the Governor, filed with the State Board of Pardona, which board, under the laws of Utah, acts upon applications for pardon and commutation.

In order that you may be correctly informed as to the facts entering into the appeal of this case to the Supreme Court of Utah, I am enclosing a copy of the decision of the Court for you perusal.

Very respectfully,

Secretary to the Governor.
