1 BAER REINHARDT PRES. & LEGAL ADVISOR

JEROME B. SABATH SEC. & TREAS.

THIS PETITION CIRCULATED BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ABOLITION OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS 291 BROADWAY, NEW YORK

TO HIS EXCELLENCY GOVERNOR SPRY and the HONORABLE BOARD OF PARDONS OF THE STATE OF UTAH

Honored Sirs: -

We, the undersigned, in no way affiliated with any Labor Organization and not being members of the National Association for the Abolition of Capital Punishment, believing that Joseph Hillstrom is an unfortunate victim of circumstances and further believing that there is reasonable doubt as to his guilt of the murder for which he stands convicted and sentenced to die, respectfully beseach you to extend clemency and mercy and commute this sentence of death to life imprisonment, that he may yet have the opportunity to prove his innocence. Should he be executed and his innocence subsequently established nothing could be done to right the terrible wrong committed, and the stain upon the escutcheon of the state of Utah could never be obliterated.

Petition

Hon Wm. Spry, Governor of Utah This appeal is directed to the Board of Pardons in behalf of Joseph Hillstrom, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, under sentence of death in the Utah Penitentiary. We have read and heard something of the case:

1st. We do no belief Joseph Hillstrom guilty of the crime for which he has been convicted. 2nd. We do not believe that he had a fair trial. 3rd. We have learned that the jurors were not selected in the usual way. 4th. The defendant was practically witihout council when he was on trial for his life. 5th. No motive was shown for the crime of which he was convicted. 6th. The conviction was found upon the flimsiest kind of circumstantial evidence.

Believing these to be the facts, we the undersigned, demand that the death sentence in the case of Joseph Hillstrom be set aside and clemency extended.
