[Letterheaded from the California Home Rule in Taxation Leage, Los Angeles Branch]

August, 18, 1914

Governor William Spry,

Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Sir:

This is respectfully to protest against the execution of the death sentence in the case of Joe Hill, and to bespeak for him your clemency.

We feel that the sentence against him was unjust, the proof being very clear that he was without malice and with no criminal intent.

He is a straightforward conscientious young man, unselfishly devoting himself (however unwisely or rashly it may be deemed) to the cause of human freedom and justice.

His over zeal, his rashness, and unwisdom, would be amply punished, we submit, by life imprisonment - and surely the great state of Utah could feel its interests fully protected without taking his life - and could afford to be merciful in this case, we hope.

Respectfully and earnestly we ask you to spare his life.

Los Angeles, Calif,. August 30, 1915.

Hon. William Spry, Governor of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Sir:

We, the undersigned, hereby petition you to exercise your power to prevent the execution of Joseph Hillstrom, now under sentence in your state to be shot October 1st.

The discontent of the laboring masses in this cuntry which is causing concern to all thoughtful people, the publication at this time of the reports of the Federal Commision on Industrial Relations in which it is granted that these masses are suffering under unjust conditions, the fact that Joseph Hillstrom's case appeals especially to the revolutionary element of the labor movement, which looks upon him as a victim of persecution, are reasons which seem to us to render it wise to exercise clemency in his case.

Added to this is a questin as to his guilt and the rapidly growing sentiment in America against the death penalty.

We ask you to give these points your earnest consideration and to save adding fuel to the fires of unrest by the death of Jeseph Hillstrom.

Yours sincerely
