[Letterheaded from the Industrial Union]

Cleveland O. Aug 2 -14

Mr. William Spry Gov. of State of Utah

Dear Sir We the members of the C.W.W. in this local union are taking means of protesting to you in behalf of our fellow worker Joe Hill who has been sentenced to be shot on Sept 4 - 14 on the charge of murder without the evidence to show why. This thing of charging a man with murder on some flimsy forward of evidence just because he is a defender of the working class is getting to be an old story and we bitterly protest against any such action on your part therefore we demand a new trial for this man as we beliee him to be a victim of some framed up plot. Hoping you will look upon this matter we are Members of the C.W.W.

Form 2297 Southern Pacific Co. Railway Club Irnlay, Nevada, July 24, 1915, His Excellency com. Spry, Governor of Utah Salt Lake City. Sir:- For the sake of the good name of the commonwealth of Utah and its peace in future history, do not allow the sentence of death to be carried out in the case of Joe Hill, The J.W.W. song writer. Utah cannot afford to stoop to a petty revenge of this sort, especially on circumstantial evidence.

I have just spoken to fellow workers coming from Utah, who are familiar with the history of the Joe Hill case, and I suppose you are also familiar with the case: you surely cannot ignore the many incidents that occurred during the trial tending to prove a strong bias against the defendant.

The many strong points made by Judge Hilton seem to have.

Bend Oregon Sept 7 1915

Governor of of Utah

Dear Sir:

As a working man and a friend of Joe Hillstrom I must protest of the killing of him Oct 1st at least without a new trial. Knowing the minds of the workers as I do, I know it would mean million dollars of loss to the state Utah, as in the case of Ford and Surah in California of which I do not think you are ignorant of The value of property as to value of the life of Joe Hillstrom is as nothing in the eyes of men and women whom are ready to act in this case, yours for action I.W.W
