Chicago, Ill. 7042 Stewart Ave., Sept .3d 1915.

Honorable William Spry, Governor of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Sir:

Joe Hill will soon be killed by the state unless you pardon him.He is a victim of predjudice according to all reports .Tho we may not agree with I. W. W. methods we must admire their zeal in working for the liberation of the working class.

Don't let Utah get a reputation like Colorado now has, for its treatment of Lawson, who is in prison for life because of what he is and proven guiltless of the crime he was charged with.

Respectfully yours,

F.W. Bartholomae.

Governor of Utah, Salt Lake City.

I consider the execution of Joe Hill to be rank murder, a blow at liberty, and a crime against civilization and of the working class of the U.S.

Respectifully,

In the case of Joe Hill, who is to be shot to death in the State of Utah on Oct 1st 1915, I wish to register my protest. Can you not see your way clear to avert this wrong-- If all men are shot to death who call for justice, then pray who will fight the fight for right? Yours for Freedom of the Press -- the speaker & all people May heaven bless you in all goods deeds.

Hon William Spry— Governor of the State of Utah;

Sir:

Your attention has been called to the now-famous mistrial and unjust conviction of one J. Hill in your jurisdiction.

This poor fellow was wrongfully convicted of a crime through a trial that, if not tragic, would be farcical.

Such miscarriage of justice seems unworthy of the good opinion I have heretofore entertained of the great state you govern.

My experience of nearly a half-century as a professional musician brought me in frequent contact with citizens

of Salt Lake City and other sections of Utah.

These were mostly sons of polygamous parents. (And what normal male parent worth a damn is [not] polygamous?). I had formed the opinion that the average citizen of a polygamous state was as near to the best specimen of Mental and Physical integrity as our country affords.

So much the more shocking & disappointing then comes the apparent fact that even in the best of states the capitalist exploiters of labor will stop at no crime to prevent the working man from unseating his rider and standing upright and free.

My plea to you is that you right the wrong they are perpetrating upon our brother Hill and thus,

by pardoning him, reestablish the eminently high degree of your progressive state in the minds of all broad-minded people and of

Your humble servant, Will Blyth[e?], Essex Co. Hospital for Insane Cedar Grove, N.J.
