Tonopah, Nev. July 25th 1914.

To His Exvellency, The Governor of UTAH Executive Mansion Salt Lake City. Utah.

Honorable Sir; We the undersigned citizens of Tonopah, do hereby duly petition your Excellency to excercise clemency in the case of Joseph Hillstom awaiting sentence of death at Salt Lake city Utah on charge of murder. As American citizens we ask you in the name of Justice and humanity to give the said Joseph Hillstram a chance for his life. The evidence that tended to convict him was purely circumstantial, and fully realizing the prejudice that existed against the prisoner owing to his radical views; we protest against a legal murder that would cast a blot on the fair escutcheon of the State of Utah, Were we sure in our minds that the conviction was without malice; we would let the law take its course but as we have proof to the contrary, we are opposed to capital punishment trusting that our prayer will receive consideration we remain,

Your Humble servants.

PETITION

Hon Wm. Spry, Governor of Utah.

This appeal is directed to the Board of Pardons in behalf of Joseph Hillstrom, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, under sentence of death in the Utah Penitentiary. We have read and heard something of the case:

1st. We do not believe Joseph Hillstrom guilty of the crime for which he has been convicted. 2nd. We do not believe that he had a fair trial. 3rd. We have learned that the jurors were not selected in the usual way. 4th. The defendant was practically without council when he was on trial for his life. 5th. No motive was shown for the crime of which he was convicted. 6th. The conviction was found upon the flimsiest kind of circumstantial evidence.

Believing these to be the facts, we the undersigned, demand that the death sentence in the case of Joseph Hillstrom be set aside and clemency extended.

Name Address

Goldfield Nevada. Wednesday September 1st.1915. To the Honorable William Spry & Board of Pardons of Utah.

Gentlemen:- We, the members of the Metal Mine Workers Union number 353 Goldfield Nevada; have by unanimous vote recommended an appeal to the Honorable William Spry, Governor of Utah in behalf of Joseph Hillstrom for clemency, and trust the board of pardons will act accordingly.
