To The Honorable Wm Spry --

I am sending you list of names signed to the attached petition pleading for the pardon of Joe Hillstrom, better known as "Joe Hill" feeling confidant that you will give the matter your earnest consideration and spare the life of this citizen and working man of whom myself and the petitioners having been informed in the case are confident of his innocence. DR. HENRY G. WINCOR 2128 HUGHES AVENUE

HOURS 8-10 1-2 6-8

NEW YORK, Sept. 4, 1915

Hon. Governor of Utah,

Dear Sir:

I wish to add my appeal to the thousands of others for the life of Joe Hill.

I do not believe Joe Hill guilty of the crime charged against him. The State of Utah would have an unforgetable blot against its fair name in taking the life of an innocent man. Secondly, I do not believe Society gains any, nor sets a good example by taking the life of its citizens.

I fervently pray you will take cognizance of the hope of thousands that Joe Hill's life be spared.

I am,

Very respectfully yours,

Henry G. Wincor M. D.

Hon. William Spry,

Governor of the State of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Sir:---

Having read accounts of the trial and sentence of Joseph Hillstrom (or Joe Hill) of your state to die Oct. 1st 1915, we the signers of the enclosed petition feel that a great injustice will be done should he be executed.

You, as Chief executive of the State of Utah, having the power to prevent this blemish on its fair name and on that of these United States, we pray that you exercise your power for this good and just end, and remember that blessed are the merciful.

Your attention is called to the appeal at the head of the first page of the petition.

Dear Governor Spry:

I am indeed glad to be able to forward you the enclosed petitions, asking your executive clemency on behalf of Joseph Hillstrom, whom we know and love as Joe Hill.

Let me add a personal word to the within. I was educated for the bar, and practiced two years; and one year, altho only 25 years old, I was presiding judge of the magistrate's court of Birmingham, Ala. I have endeavored to look into this case now before you from the legal standpoint; and it seems to me that if ever there was a case where the testimony [inserted above: and sentence] would indicate a miscarriage of justice, this is it. Even as in the Leo Frank case, from my [inserted above: formerly-] neighboring state of Georgia, great injustice was finally done, despite the pardon, because of the biased condition of the people; so, I am afraid, the history of your State will be stained, unless you did as Slaton did; and thereafter no outrage is committed on this defendant.

It seems to me that justice demands this step. I am sure that mercy does. Best wishes to you, and high hopes that you will see it your duty to decide against bias and prejudice, and for this defendant.

Sincerely,

Clement Wood
