Hon. Wm. Spry

Governor of Utah,

Honorable Sir:

I am enclosing for your consideration a petition
signed by numerous citizens of this town (Spokane) asking for your executive
clemency on behalf of Joseph Hillstrom now under sentence of death in the
State Penitentiary of Utah.

It is our sincere belief that Hillstrom has not had a fair & impartial
trial, that he was deprived of certain Constitutional rights, the deprivation
of which, have placed his life in jeopardy, unjustly & unfairly.

We are looking to you, an official elected to enforce justice & safe-guard
the guaranteed rights of the inhabitants of your State, to rectify as far as
lies within your power, the judicial crime perpertrated upon the person of
Joseph Hillstrom.

We are confident that the sense of justice, that should be inherent in all
men, is not lacking in you, personally, & that you will exercise that sense of
justice in favor of that obscure working man, Joseph Hillstom. If however you
are one of those individuals who are so mired in the swamp of prejudice, that
all perception of right & wrong is lost, & you allow this man to go to his
death, without giving him a chance for a new and impartial trial, then we
hold you just as guilty of his death as tho you were the man on that firing
squad of murderers, who fires the guilty shot, that will send into eternity
a man who has tried to do more for humanity, than all the judges & governors
who have ever lived in the State of Utah.

Trusting you will give ear to the now universal cry of protest, that is going
up on all sides, against this judicial assassination, that is about to be
committed by the State of Utah, I remain,

Yours for Justice
Richard Brazier
Sec'y, I. W. W. Locals, #115 N. Browne St, Spokane
