His Excellency. The Governor of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah,

My dear sir: -

We shall celebrate the fifth anniversary of woman suffrage in California on October 10th, by a popular reception and luncheon at the Alexandria Hotel in the city of Los Angeles, under the auspices of the Million Club, of which I am president.

I am writing to the governors of the various States where woman suffrage prevails asking them to give me their opinion as to the success of suffrage their respective States - what effect for good or otherwise has suffrage had upon the body politic.

I shall appreciate any word you may be so kind to send me. If women have taken any special part in as the general uplift I shall be very glad to have you say as much. These letters will be read upon the occastion above mentiones, to a most appreciative audience.

Thanking you in advance I am.

Very respectfully yours,

Clara Shortridge Foltz

P.S. Under separate cover I am forwarding you sample copy of "The New American Woman." C.S.F.

Honorable William Spry Governor State of Utah The Capitol Salt Lake City Utah

Dear Sir;

As you are probably aware the enemies of Woman suffrage make one mistatement after another about conditions in the western states. I have been told by western men that Woman Suffrage has been a valuable asset in all the pioneer states, becasuse of the advertisement that it gave to the state, and adverstisement is the breath of trade.

I am, therefore, asking you if you can send me or cause to be sent to me any available statistics as to the growth in population, in commerce, in agricultre, in bank balances, and in general prosperity any figures that you may have for your State for the five or ten years preceding 1896, and for the five or ten years succeeding 1896.

If it is necesssary to give me the figures for five years only please make them all for the five year period, or all for the ten year period, so that an accurate comparison may be made and ratios astablished.

I shal be grateful if you will send me this at your very earlist convenience.

Very cordially yours Kate Devereux Blake Chairman Teachers' Section
