CHASED BY SUBMARINES.
A LINER'S ADVENTURE.
On arrival at Liverpool, the liner Ling Chow, belonging to that port, reported having encountered a submarine on the voyage from London to Glasgow. The captain made the following statement:
"We left London on Wednesday, and on Thursday night had reached about ten miles off Long Ship's Light, at Land's End. Our look-out man sighted a submarine. I at once gave orders to turn towards the shore, and make for safety at full speed. We kept up the pace for twenty minutes or half an hour. We were followed during the whole of the time by the submarine, but finally her commander, apparently deciding that he could not overtake us, relinquished the chase. To make assurance doubly sure, I kept on at full speed for two hours, until darkness came on. Then we turned, and proceeded on the voyage to Glasgow, taking the precaution to put out the lights for safety. We reached Glasgow without further encountering submarines or anything untoward."
The Norwegian steamer Nadso, which has arrived at Swansea, reports having seen a German submarine on the way round the coast some days ago. The submarine came up suddenly, being too close, it is stated, to fire a torpedo, and almost as suddenly disappeared below again when she saw British destroyers giving chase.
