May 19th - 23rd. London.

wrote Mrs [unclear] a note. War news continues cheerful. Both the French & British have gained several miles in the last few days.

Wed. 19th. Office. Miss Wanstall came with me to the "Shield" for lunch & we had a little walk after. Went up to the Orchard's for dinner & took Ruby the little silver & enamel box for a wedding present. Left about nine. [Gerty?] walked nearly down to the station with me. Lovely evening but cool. Ruby looks a bit tired - has lots of pretty clothes & presents.

Thurs. 20th. Office. Lunch at the "Shield" & then went to look at the Canadian papers at the H.C. Office. One account spoke of the men saying that Col. Leckie led them splendidly in the charge. They are forming a new Coalition Cabinet. Lord Haldane is going for one & Bonar Law coming in. Wrote a note to Rolly & one to Mrs Orchard.

Frid. 21st. Office. A new "hand" - Mrs Black, late of Vancouver. Her husband is in the Seaforths - I've seen him with Jean Macdonald at [training?] class. She is very nice - sits at my table. A wounded man from the 16th came in - an Australian [unclear]. We had a chat with him. Made an appointment to wash my hair but could not have it done when I went there as the water was too cold. Was rather digusted. Wrote in the eve.

Sat. 22nd. Office. Mrs Black & I left at five & went up to No 1 General Hospital to see Gavin Davis. He had a narrow shave of losing his arm but though it will be shorter than the other he has the use of it still. Stayed over at No. 21 most of the eve. Sitting out on the balcony. Lovely weather.

Sun. 23rd. Glorious day - quite hot. Miss Haddock & I went to [Down?] St. Church & for a walk in the park after. It was beautiful there. When I got home the maid told me that Major Leckie & Mrs Annesley were in the drawing room. I was rather startled as I was afraid something bad happened to Bertie & rushed up but their faces reassured me & it was awfully jolly to see them again. Jack is just out from the trenches - there has been heavy fighting this week & we've lost several more officers. Max [Reid?], who has
