in a wonderful glove of trees. I spoke to two of the 16th who were in the ward - both were suffering from gas poisiong which they got at Ypres two months ago. Their breathing is still laboured though otherwise they looked well. Afterwards we had tea with Major & Mrs Bowie at their house & took a train home about seven getting home in good time for supper.
Monday 5th. Office. Took my half afternoon off to make up for Saturday. Lunched at the [unclear] House. Miss Wanstall with me. Then I went over to the Can Red Cross Society in Cockspur St. Saw Mrs Fraser of Lancaster there, she said Nevill was in town so 'phoned to him & he came down. He has grown quite big & wears the uniform of a gunner in the R.H.A. He ran away from home & came over here & enlisted. I went home to tea with them in their lovely flat (Lady Drummond's) Lady D. lets them have it & [also?] the Misses Fleet who came in to tea. Nevill walked home with me & we sat out on the balcony for a while.
Wed. 7th. Office.
Thurs. 8th. Letter from Bertie in the A.M. saying he expected to get leave as soon as Jack came back. Then I had a 'phone message in the middle of the morning saying he was here & I met him at the stores for lunch. He is looking awfully well - several years younger. Afterwards he came down to the office with me. Later on Mrs Godson came in & I went out for tea with her to the "Shield". Bertie dined with me at no 21. Afterwards we sat out on the balcony a bit & then he came over & we looked at the papers here. He left about 10 as he was tired.
Frid. 9th. Office. Dorothy arrived about 7. Bertie drove up with her & then we all went to the "Criterion" for dinner. Bertie had an engagement later so Dorothy & I went to the "Victoria Palace" Music Hall & quite enjoyed it.
Sat. 10th. Office in the A.M. D. & I spent all the first part of the aft. at the Club waiting for B. to 'phone but he didn't. I came over after tea & tidied up my table, Bertie arrived about 6.30 & had a little [wait?]. He had a dinner engagement. Dorothy, Miss Tarnoski & I went to the "Pavillion" in Oxford St. in the eve. & saw some moving pictures - a splendid "animated map" of the 2nd battle of Ypres.
