made a grand procession with lights, crosses, wooden figures, &.c and came to give the unfortunate man extreme unction they surrounded him with such a concourse of people that the patient could hardly breathe (at a time when fresh air was the most necessary thing for him) & notwithstanding the interference of the medical Officer of the Division all was to no purpose they kept round him in this manner for 15 minutes made him confess & gave him extreme unction the consequence was the man died the medical Officer attributed it to no other cause I saw the man myself & from the many instances I had before seen of fatigue I am sure he would have been as well as ever had he been left alone
2nd We marched to Alpahao
3rd We marched to Niza , two leagues & half, a curious old town surrounded by a wall there is a great deal of wood about it which renders it very pleasant we halted here on the
4th I never was in any town in Portugal where the Inhabitants were so uncivil on the 2nd of July Head Quarters were at Castel Branco the whole Army
