Haileybury was founded for boys intending
to become Civil servants of the Company.*

Wellesley's smaller schemes.

The main features of Wellesley's career as
Governor-General have been outlined. But
it must be remembered that we have
not even touched on many smaller schemes
& acts which he attempted or carried out:
we have not mentioned the Red Sea Expedition;
his relations with Persia; or his
intercourse with the great Mughal: we
have said nothing of his wish for the incorporation
of Ceylon with the Indian dominions;
his scheme for the capture of
Mauritius - only prevented by Admiral
Rainier & his red tape -; or his refusal,
subsequently justified, to surrender the
French possessions & Goa & Scrampur.

Wellesley & the subsidiary treaties.

Wellesley left India on August 15th, 1805.
after seven years of unceasing toil & infinite
service to his country. We have no
concern with his later life; we must judge
his character by his deeds in India alone.

It is difficult to see why this college was
abolished as a training-school for Indian
Civil Servants in 1858 when India passed
to the Crown.
