Augusta August 14th 1871

To Wm. W. Crapo. Esqr

Dear Sir,
Yours of 19th of July is at hand haveing been absent the past Month from Augusta, did not get the Letter & Documents before, as to signing these Instruments I must decline, I have sent in my Claims for Personal effects destroyed to the amount of $2000 I also signed an Instrument forwarded me for that purpose, by F. R. Whitwell Jr., also signed by himself & Sisters on Account of the loss of the Barque Favorite & Cargo this I think was Valued & damages 130,000 dolls sence I have been absent I have put in a Claim for 1/4 of Catchings, not hearing from you, I should not have done this, had affairs remained as they were when I was on the Barque as I should have relied on them to have paid me my proportion of the Catchings having been always intimately connected with the Family for 30 years I have always found them honorable in all their dealings.
