Secretary Marine Dept. Board Trade 19 Jany 1857 Dear Sir I beg to acquaint you that the Screw Steam Vessel "Victoria" of ~Grimsby owned by the "Anglo French Steam Ship Company Limited arrived here thiss morning from Rouen in from Ballast - when off Folkestone she was ran into by a Russian Brig, which did her much damage The Russian Brig went down under her load - but all hands were saved - The circumstances are these, The "Victoria" was pursuing a correct course with all proper lights exhibited - The Brig was seen nearly a mile off and had she kept her course would have gone clear of the "Victoria" but when she approached near her course was suddently by the helm being put to starboard - The Master of the "Victoria" immediately ordered his helm to be ported, as directed by instructions, hoping thereby to shoot clear of the Brig, when the Brig came on [toward?] her & went down as {stated} before stated I therefore called upon the Master to make Declaration thereof on Form W 2 The Solicitor of the Company therefore attended and objected to any Declaration being taken urging that the 448 Section of the M.S. Act 1854 related to salvage cases,

only, and that under the 432nd Sec no fee was chargeable even if an examination takes place You will therefore oblige by instructing me whether any examination is necessary in this case, and if so whether to be taken on Form W? 32 @ - and also whether a Fee is chargeable. JS

69 Lieut Poynter R.N 20th Jan 1857 Patrington

Sir Annexed is a request from Mr Peter Flutter Chief Boatman in command at the Holmpton Station - that I would look after in his interest and that of his Boatmen in respect of services rendered by them in landing the stores of the Vessel "Lavinia" of Deptford wrecked near Withernsea on the 4 instant A Certificate of the Master of the Vessel of the Services Rendered is also annexed.

I have allowed the Stores &c to be removed by the owner on a Deposit of £8.".". which I shall hold till you obtain the decision of the Comptroller Genl of the Ct Guard as to its disposal. J Sparrow

Sec Marine Dept Hastening letter calling for form W 1 - particulars of the Wreck "John French" of Rochester on 9th Inst T H Farrer 23/1/57 I have made every possible enquiry respecting the Vessel above named without success She must have been wrecked in some other district - the "Laura" of Rochester was wrecked on the 4th instant - I forwarded the Master's Depositions on the 14th J Sparrow Marginalia S

Capt. Palmer B. Quay 29 Jany / 57 Orders issued as to the disposal of the Goods they will in a day or two be removed respg Stores now in the watch house JS Marginalia P

30 Jany / 57 Lt Stewart is requested to state his opinion whether the two oak trees within mentioned - which were Droits nos 142 & 178/1854 and returned to the late Mr Stephenson formed part of the Cargo of the "Prince" JS Marginalia S
