Lt Stewart 30 Jany /57 is requested to state his opinion whether the Oak Tree within mentioned which was Droit No 153/1856 formed part of the cargo of the "Prince" JS Marginalia S

Capt Palmer RN 30 Jany /57 Sir Annexed is a letter from Mr C. L Ringrose Junr enclosing for my inspection an account rendered to him by Mr Hoard chief officer at the Coast Guard Station Sandlemere, in respect of Services rendered by himself and men to the Dutch Galliott "Martha Alida" stranded at that place on the 11 Inst, amounting to £9. 5. 0 which account I also annex viz: For services of [men] £9: 0: 0 Fort Cart to convey men £0: 5: 0 £9: 5: 0 Mr Ringrose states that the Services of Mr Hoad and his men were prompt and effectual and requests to be informed whether, as all payments in this matter will come under a general average - the claim is a legitimate one, Mr Ringrose having deposited the said £9: 5: 0 in my hands - I will thank you to make inquiry and report the nature of the Services to the Controller General of the Coast Guard, - and obtain his directions as to the disposal of the said sum JS Marginalia P

71 3 Feby 1857 Mr Hoad will have the Goodness to deliver the oilseed cake landed from the Dutch Galliott "Martha Alida" and state on the accompanying Red order that he has so done and return it in the envelope herewith sent JS Marginalia H

Secretary Marine Department Board of Trade London Sir 6 Feby / 57 I beg to acquaint you that £9:9:0 have been deposited with me by the Dutch Consul for Services rendered by Officers of the Coast Guard at Sandlemere which sum the controller General of the Coast Guard has directed to be divided according to a scale printed out by him. - I will therefore thank you to inform me whether it will be necessary for me to shew such sums in my account current,- charging and discharging myself therewith as per forms W [?] 7 and 8,- and also in cases where parties give sums of money to Coast Guard Officers into their own hands which they report to their Inspecting Commanders for the directions of the Controller General,- whether it is necessary that such sums should also be reported to the Wreck Receiver to pass through his accounts JS

No 1751 R. 7 Feb 1857 Ref Mr Farrer Capt Robertson the Receiver of Wreck of Custom House Hull is informed that all sums received on account of wreck must be brought into his account current and the money referred to must appear in W [?] 7 & 8 [?] 7 Feb/57 James Booth Feb 9

Be so good as to send me a list of names with amounts opposite each, dividing the £9,- and have goodness to say whether the money given to Mr Hoad on account of the "Margaret" shall pass through my Books or through your account, I shall not want the money but merely a division thereof JS Marginalia P

J B Hamilton Esqr Receiver General Droits of Admiralty Lancaster Place London Sir 10 Feb 1857 Amended is an application from Mr John of [?Runton] for the proceed of two oak trees that came on shore at Hornsea and was sold by me as detailed at numbers 142 and 178 / 1856 in copy of Report Book forwarded to you by the Board of Trade, the Droits having been washed on shore during the Receivership of Wreck of the late Mr Stephenson of Bridlington Quay their net proceeds are as follows - viz No 142 - £0 :11 :8 178 - 3 2 Total 14:10 the 14s10d in question is included in the sum of £151: 17: 4 remitted to you on the 18th Sept. last through Mr James Stephenson

of Bridlington Quay, son of the late receiver It is supposed that the Trees in question formed part of the cargo of the sloop "Prince" from the River Ancholme in this port to Sunderland -- she was cleared here on the 10th May 1853 and foundered the same day near Flamborough Head and her cargo from time to time washed to shore between Skipsea and Tunstall Hornsea being about midway between those two places, Mr. Runton has informed me that "TR & Co" was stamped upon all the Trees of which the cargo "Prince" was made up. Those marks however might be rubbed off by the rolling of the Trees against different objects as they were washed up to the shore

The Secretary Marine Dep't London 10 Feby/57 Sir Annexed is an application from Mr John J Runton for the proceeds of an oak tree that came on shore at Hornsea and was sold by me as detailed at No 153/1536 on copy of report Book, by which it will be seen that -- on account thereof -- I have in hand the sum of 13s/10d It is supposed that the tree in question formed part of the cargo of the sloop "Prince" from the river Ancholme in this port to Sunderland, she was cleared here on the 4th May 1853, and foundered the same day near Flamborough Head and her cargo from time to time washed on shore between Skipsea and Tunstall being about midway between those two places. Patrington Sir 13 Feb 1857 With refereence to your letter of todays date respecting the watching of the Cargo of Timber, Deals &c Ex "Perseverence" from [Fremel?]. - wrecked at Kilnsea on the 14th ulto, - I beg to acquaint you that in respect thereof, - I have received from Messrs Harrison a deposit of £24:14:0 and will thank you to describe to the Controller General of the Coast Guard the Services rendered by your Officers and obtain his directions as to its disposal. "Oak Trees" Board of Trade Marine Department Minute Papers No 2064 Registered 14 day of Feby 1857 Referred to Mr Farrer Capt. Robertson The Receiver of Wreck C. House, Hull Is informed that as the property was not claimed at the time and as there appear to have been no Marks on it corresponding with the description given by Mr Renton by which it could be identified it must be dealt with as a Droit.
