Constitution of the United States Read first 30 pages of Swisher on origin of the Constitution.

For all practical purposes the origin of U. S. Cons. starts about 1607. Settlers of Jamestown had a charter that was somewhat analogous to a constitution. It was, however, a grant whereas the constitution was not of any grant. The Mayflower compact was nearer to constitution as it was an agreement among men aboard the Mayflower to govern themselves. The fundamental orders of Cons. around 1637 was of a similar nature. Around 1750 there was the beginnings of a plan to govern. At that time there was no thought of separation from England. Benj. Franklin was a prime mover of this. Later the formation of Continental Congress, the drafting of Articles of Confederation, the realization that they would not work and then the drafting of the Constitution.
