For the last two days (yesterday & day before) I have been
among the Camps with Chas.
Stuart Esq
of Philadelphia. You
know his large heart & purse, & with
what enthusiasm he enters into every
thing of this kind. He had known
but little of what we had been
doing at Boston or of our army
work. His visit was to look up
his sabbath school boys in the Phil.
& Pa. Regiments. Of course you
may suppose I took him round -- or
rather he took me as it proved for
he would pay the bills -- stable &
hotel. Our reception every where was the same as
I have described to you before (all
eager to receive our publications)
with the exception that we took to preaching
to Extemporized Crowds. Mr. S you know
is famous in his time. He preached himself
hoarse & into one of my nervous headaches.
We would begin with tracts, & customers
increased beyond our power of supply we
fell back upon the old apostolic way of
tract distribution.
