Washington. Dec 24th His Excellency, Abraham Lincoln: Dear Sir: My friend Mr. J. W. Alvord has since commence-ment of the war been devoting all his time and energies to the spiritual and physical interests of our soldiers. home renewing his strength for a continuance of his labors of love. The War Department not knowing him, refuse to give him a pass. I fear they have too little sympathy, at any rate, with the work in which he is engaged. But however this may be, I do hope, Mr. President, that you will put him in a way to return to his work without embarrasment or delay. If God is smiling on his labors as I believe, then He will smile on you for encouraging him therein.
