Washington, Jan, 7, 1863 His Excellency, The President: Dear Sir: The RevJ. W. Alvord you have seen before. He has been earnestly & faithfully devoted to the physical and spiritual interests of our soldiers from the commencement of the war. Hee wishes now to be appointed to a chaplaincy service in hospitals in front, the im-portance of which he will explain to you. He will be energetic & faithful in that service, & I hope you will grant his request. Yours truly, P. W. Gurley.
