quite bare of clothing, but get
along without complaining.

Took dinner today with 10 or 12
of the Teachers of Col.^d & refugee
schools, a group of self-denying
ones. They deserve much of
of those who can help in
this work and stay at home.
Their schools are in the old rebel
laboratory, seats—old ammunition
boxes, & desks. Those used by the
rebel Congress. The grave yard
of rebel & union soldiers is on
either side of these buildings—
where tens of thousands who fought
each other, now sleep peacefully
side by side—A gloomy locality
you say (2 miles from the city) & so
it is, & so much the more the
self denial of these teachers.
