The SALLY HEMINGS
Vol 4, No. 2

FOR THEY ARE ALL HONORABLE MEN ' ' '

What happens to a student when he lies, cheats, or steals? He or she is dismissed. What happens when the Honor Committee decides to lie, cheat or steal? They receieve money from private sources. We give the Honor Committee 24 hours to defend itself on the following charges:

We charge that the Honor Committee:

a. used the postal meter belonging to the University Registrar's office to mail their majority report against a double sanction or graduated penalty system.

b. used also the University computerized address labels.

c. and used the University's non-profit mailing permit.

d. The use of this permit allowed the Honor Committee to mail letters for 2 cents apiece, and in addition, the used of this permit allowed the Honor Committee to be considered as a non-profit organization, when in fact, their own non-profit permit is merely pending.

e. Concerning the use of this permit, Post Office authorities were told by the University that the Honor Committee was a University Organization. This raises questions about the nature of the Honor Committee. Is it a Student Organization, as it is averred in its propaganda? If it is, then can all Student Organizations use this permit? In fact, the Student Council has been denied such use.

f. Moreover, we question the use of D. Allan Williams' Office of Student Affairs as a financial procurer for the Honor Committee. According to Williams, the Honor Committee gets extra funds from "private sources" whenever they need it, just by the simple act of coming to his office. Williams will then solicit anonymous sources for this money. If the Honor Com-mittee is a Student Organization, can this procedure entitle any other Student Organization to the same benefits, or is this a special privilege? Who really determines the Honor Commit-tee's budget? What are these useful souces "private"? If the Honor Committee is a Student Organization why doesn't it have a budget determined by the Student Council?

WE DEMAND THE RIGHT TO KNOW THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS:

1. If the Honor Code is entirely student run, then why do the alumni and the administration have so much say in it?

2. Why are the students only given control of their own punishment, and not permitted to draw up their own code of conduct, instead of accepting the one drawn up by the administration and Board of Visitors?

3. If the Honor Code is entirely student run, then why was the Honor Committee afraid of a student referendum?

4. If the Honor Code is entirely student run, then why did an administrator use the weight of his office to press charges on Richard Carmona?

5. If the Honor Code is entirely student run, then doesn't the Honor Committee owe the students a public disclosure of its budget?

FOR-HERE-WE-ARE-NOT-AFRAID-TO-FOLLOW-THE-TRUTH-WHEREVER-IT-MAY-LEAD-SO-LONG-AS-REASON-IS-LEFT-FREE-TO-COMBAT-IT AWARD: To Tom Bagby, for his, and his fellow autocrats' fear that the Honor System will be destroyed by a mob-inspired referendum. God knows what the masses may force us to do next, eh, Tom?

THE IT-CAN'T-HAPPEN HERE AWARD: To previous Honor Committees for the assertion that women will undermine the Honor Code.

THE IN-NOMINE-PATRIS-FILIUS-ET-SPIRITU-SANCTUS AWARD: To Tom Bagby, Gordon Peer-man, and Peter Shea.
