Christmas Carol 02 recto

Collaboration is restricted for this collection. Please contact the project owner if you wish to help transcribe.

  • Please amend any initial text supplied, using the transcription conventions listed below:
  • Spelling: Always use original spelling as it appears in the manuscript.
  • Capitalization: Always use original capitalization.
  • Punctuation: Include any punctuation that may be present in the original document.
  • Underlining: Dickens's use of underlining is very idiosyncratic. Use the u button to indicate underlining of any sort, for example at the beginning of chapters e.g. text
  • Line Breaks: Hit return once to mark the end of a line.
  • Indentations: Ignore any indentation at the beginning of a new paragraph.
  • Deletions: Where a letter, word or phrase has been deleted or struck through, use the del button e.g. text.
  • Insertions: Include the text of any manuscript additions at the place where Dickens intended it to be inserted, using the add button e.g. text. Do not attempt to include any symbols or lines he may also have employed.
  • Unclear or illegible text: Indicate illegible readings using the unclear button, with question marks to indicate the approximate number of illegible characters. Include spaces between words e.g. Dr????? ??? ???
  • Discrepancies/specific notes: Where necessary you can include a note in square brackets, giving more information about any other substantial discrepancies between the manuscript and the published text. Examples include words that appear in the text supplied, but do not appear in the original manuscript, e.g. [manuscript = boiling; text = burning].
  • General notes: You can also provide general notes and comments about the page in the Notes box at the bottom of the screen e.g. This page includes text in another hand.
