Sîʿ. The base mouldings of the temple which is of
course the base mould of the pilasters is not unlike
that of the new temple. The moulding of the podium also.
The base of the columns has a good [trus] below a
deep section, and, above this, only a narrow head (with attic)
where this the apophyge is attached. The shaft
shows little diminution. The capital gives the
Key note to the building; it is of that sort hitherto
known only at Petra, and found by us in Bosra.
They differ from those at Bosra in having small
smooth leaves upon the echinus under the pier angles
of the great abacus. No fragments of architrave
were found, it was perhaps plain, but a frieze of
grape vine was found, and a fine bit of mouldings
that were perhaps the cornice. The jambs of the
portal were found to have the lower courses in situ, one of
the members has rich grape vine ornament, the
ancon had each a large bunch of grape pendant.
