il-Haiyât. This site was revisited for the purpose of
securing photographs and measurements of a
great private house with an inscription in situ
which was copied by Dr. Littmann in 1900, while
while I was busy at the Kalybé to the east of town.

The house in question is the largest in the town
and is occupied by the Shêkh of the village.
It has been only slightly altered for modern use
and the original plan and the interior
arrangement of both floors are almost unchanged.

The whole building forms a large square, 26.80m
on N. side, with a large open court in the middle.
The court is reached through an arched passage
from the south opening into the S.E. angle of the
court. Within the court are four great arches about
a square, which carry an open piazza for the
upper story. The rooms on the ground floor are
alternatively large and small, the former are
arched, the latter have 2 stories below the terrace.
