Past the singing broad Wisconsin
Reached at length the wonderful river
Of all waters, Sir paternal.
All day long upon his Green
In amused content we floated
In the rain and in the sunshine
Counting his great ribs of limestone
(Once the Earth's heart could not hold him
Still we feel his 'circulation.'
When the Maidens Rock in shadow
From the purple deeps uplooketh
William Richards sunk, (in slumber)
Dreaming of his absent dear ones
Of his wife & of his babies
Of the deacons in his parish
And the chance of getting letters
When we reached the St Paul landing
Then (at about 4 1/2 o'clock, Lake Ripon [illegible])
This dear soul to mine returning
Through the open gates of dream land
Converse [illegible] of many loved ones
In the land of the sun rising
By the shores of fair Mendota
In the far Pacific Country.
And of the far off Heavenly Country
Whither all our lives are tending
[side note] To be chanted
