Folder Description: These diaries, written by Increase Lapham, include details about his daily life, work, family, travels, and interests. The first diary from 1827 to 1828 begins with scientific tables, lists, and observations before journal entries begin on page 82. This diary was predominately written in Shippingport, Kentucky. Pages 25-26, 41-44, 69-70, 83-84, and 157-158 have been removed. Pages 184 through 191 are blank. Pages 192 through 199 were written upside and for the ease of viewing have been rotated. The second diary was written predominately in 1828 by Lapham in Kentucky. A few entries appear to have been written earlier, or refer to earlier experiences. The diary contains writings and scientific materials similar to that of the first diary. The end of the diary appears to have been written by Darius Lapham, brother to Increase, in the early 1820s. These entries begin from the back of the diary and are upside down. For ease of viewing the pages have been rotated and appear in order. This folder also includes published edited transcriptions of Lapham's diaries titled: The Falls of the Ohio River and Its Environs: The Journals of Increase Allen Lapham for 1827-1830 (Part 1 and 2). The diary excerpts were published by the Filson Historical Society.
