Columbus May 3d/65

I. A. Lapham Esqr

Dear Sir. Both your letters of
April 17th and May 1st have been duly
received. Owing to repeated absences from
Columbus the first was received lately and
I had not time to answer it. What
you say of the difference of elevation of
both the coal strata of La Salle and of
Fairburg does not at all indicate a
[subit?] change of level due to volcanic
force. The dip may be somewhat stronger
toward the axis and antidinal axis of
Lasalle, but if Fairburg is on the S.
part of Livingston Co the difference
of level is about just as it would be
on the other side of the Lasalle axis.
You will confer a favor in making
to me the exact longitude of Bairburg
coal mine and also in furnishing us
with as many reliable R. R. to to [?]
phical levels as possible from Illinois
and we will then discuss the matter
