My Dear Sir

I owe you
an apology for not replying
to your esteem favor of 17th ulto.
which was recd. in due course
of mails. The fact is, I have
been awaiting the analysis
of the coal which Doct. Blaney
promised to furnish me long
since, but I suppose I must
excuse him, knowing that he
is a government official -
& then the past 3 weeks has
been so crowded with events
of such important character,
that we must be ready to
excuse almost any delinquency.
I excuse the Doct B. & hope
you will be as charitable
