The elevation above the lea of
the height of land NW of Lake
Superior is well known by the
measurements of the [Engl. Exped?]
of the Canadian Gov. summed
up in Hinds' narrative.

On the west towards the Mississippi
the divide beyond St Louis River is
1075. - On the NW of the Royale
& shore of Lake Superior on Pigeon Riv
route the Height of Land Lake [?]
1485 altitude. Rainy Lake on the
WW. Hope 1035. The Mountains
near Pigeon Riv reach 1900 ft.

Further East nothing is known

definitely. Our Canadian friends
of the Geological Survey have
not given as yet anything in the
way of Altitude on the divide
between Hudson Bay & St Lawrence.
From the measurements on the
South of that line I estimate
that part of the height of land
at [?] 1000 to 1500 ft. -
It reaches 2000 in the plateau
of Labrador, where Hind gives,
on another work 2240 for the
divide of the waters, at the
head of Massie Riv. The chain
of Mountains, however along
