Copy of a Letter from J.J. Hagerman to Robert Burnsen, January 2nd

Copy office of Mil. Iron Co. Milwaukee Jan 2 1875.

Robert Bunsen Esq. Dear Sir

We have used several car loads of fire clay from near Grand Rapids Wis., and have found it fully equal in quality if not superior, to any fire clay we have ever used, we have also used a few fire bricks made from it merely to test the quality and found them as good as any we ever used. Should you make them at Grand Rapids, I have no doubt we could use from 200 to 300 per annum for repairs above. I think they could be at a large profit and drive the Eastern brick out of this market Your & c

Kilbourn City 4th Jun 1875 Professor Lapham Milwaukee Wis Dear Sir I once more sent you some samples. The rock up to 900 feet is I think the same as the last I sent you but since then it is a little softer for where we went to drill only 2 1/2 feet in 19 hours we now can bore 5 feet to 6 1/2 in the same time. If you see any change please let me hear from you.

Yours respectfully W.E. Swan

Dr Sir

I have now examined Mr. King's Report on the Lepidopterous Insects of Wisconsin and find that it contains matter of considerable interest and value; perhaps worthy of a place among the publications of the Geological Survey. I wish, however, that he had been more particular in his chirography, many of his words, especially the technical names, we find very difficult, some impossible, to make out; the best composition would make very good work with it. Please call Mr. King's attention to this, and request that any future work of his may be more carefully prepared. I hope to have our work printed without typographical or other errors, to secure which it is necessary to supply clear copy.

Very truly yours,

I. A. Lapham
