My dear Sir: Your kind favor of the 25th was duly received. I thank you much for your words of encouragement and congratulation. Indeed I am highly gratified at the tone of the many letters already received in response to our circular, which evince a more general interest in the enterprise than I have presumed to expect. We have secured a room in a fire proof building for the safe keeping of destructible material until our own buildings are completed. I have taken especial note of the interesting memorandum accompanying your letter.

Dr. I.A. Lapham, My dear sir, The peculiar substance you sent me last week I have not yet examined for want of time. I shall endeavor to do so tomorrow. Should it prove to be a hydro-carbon mineral I would be glad to bring it to the notice of the Academy to it next week, and so should be glad of any facts you may be able to give me in relation to it.
