Sterile spike single; fertile spikes 2 or 3
ovoid or oblong about 5 flowered, on stalks about
the length of the spikes; perigynia ovoid-triquetrous
striate, large; bracts green, the upper about
equal to the spikes, the lower exceeding them;
leaves dark green, all radical, very broad,
striate. Culms 1 to 2 feet high;
Flowers in May.
Rich moist or marshy grounds in woods.
