Sterile spike solitary; fertile spikes
four oblong 5 to 8 flowered, on stems
about the length of the spikes; perigynia ovoid=
=triquetrous striate; bracts very short, dark purple, or
the lowest greenish at the apex; leaves all
radical, very broad, nerved. Culms
12 to 18 inches high; flowers in May
Shady woods, in damp, rich soil.
Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and
about Lake Superior. Northward to
the arctic regions, and eastward to New
England.
