Falls St. Anthony - White Sandstone overlaid by limestone (se 289) which begins 1/2 mile above the fall and extends down the river forming cliffs.
White sandstone "white as the driven snow" first seen in descending at St. A. & continues 35 miles below forming bluffs (se 301)
Carvers cave on East bank of Miss 12 miles below St. Peters in white sand rock.
At mouth of St. Croix bluff limestone very imposing for 50 miles below terminate in pyramids (see p 322)
At Lake Pepin - Bluffs calcereous - also at Prairie du Chien Dubuque
On the Wisconsin - limestone on white sandstone (50 or 60 m above mouth) (see p 360)
Limestone hills extend to within 20 m of portage when it ceases on S. Shore but contains [illegible].
Bluffs do not extend to Fox river.
Near the Pekatonia Maj Long found sandstone or limestone & conjectured that limestone formerly existed above. White sand cement white or ferraginous. Each particle a distinct crystal.
