The Limestone 3 miles north of Racine is similar to that of Furlong's quarry in Greenfield above described. It dips towards Lake Michigan being in a direction opposite the dip at Furlongs & thus showing an anticlinal axis along the valley of Root river! The large rock removed from the harbor at Racine has a lighter color and contains chirt; it therefore probably belongs to the coniferous rock formation & may be the remains of strata removed by the action of the lake. Its hard flinty character may account for the rocky reef off this port; being too hard to be carried away by the water.
