Sulphur (Symbol S. Eq=16). This well known
substance is a sold, pale yellow, inflammable—and of
great utility to man. It is found pure in some
volcanic districts, but is chiefly found combined with
other substances. As a food of plants its chief
source is gypsum which is a combination of
sulphur with oxygen and calcium (sulphate of lime)
It is found in the ashes of all the grasses that have
been analysed. p. 19

Potassium. (Symbol K (Kalium) Eq. 39.2) This
is one of the metals, the base of potash a well
known alkali. It has a highly metallic lustre, color
blush white, easily melted, and has so strong attachment
for oxygen that it [burns] readily if thrown upon ice. It
can only be kept by protecting it from contact with
air, water or other substance containing oxygen.
Ashes sometimes set [fire] to wood by the action of potassium &c- Its specific gravity is .865 being lighter than water. It is a very abundant element, found in the ashes of most plants. It enters largely into the composition of feldspar an ingredient of granite and some other rocks. An abundant supply in the form of potash, must be maintained in all soils-p 19
